Without a doubt, Cheever’s gritty, unflinching bust-your-ass attitude has been a major factor in this dude’s success. I don’t know how he still finds the time for interviews, but luckily he made time for us. - Author: Michael Villa

Where do you see Snowboard Cross headed in the next five to ten years?

I see SBX being as popular as Indy-car racing or something like that. The athletes have finally progressed enough where everything else has to catch up. When I say everything else, I mean the TV coverage, the prize money, the sponsors and the courses. Since this transition is happening, the technology is way better, and some courses are insane.

I just saw a report that showed Snowboarding was the most viewed event at these past Olympics. All we need now is the right people to take charge of the media of the sport. The athletes want to showcase themselves and that can be tough when some of our events are televised like a high-school sport. ESPN does a pretty good job with X-Games. But we need more sponsors, recognition and coverage in order to be taken seriously. I think the next step is to make sure these groups, as well as SBX magazine, are all heading towards the same goal in order to make this progress faster and smoother.

What advice would you give kids looking to compete at a higher level in this sport?

Raw talent will only take a rider so far. You need to be an athlete in order to be competitive. If you are serious about it, don’t hold back at all. Work your ass off. I knew where I wanted to be. I knew it would be a long road, but it takes the right attitude and work ethic to get where you want.

How did it feel to become the U.S. Champion on your home mountain?

It was awesome. My parents flew out to see me race. In all honesty I wasn’t feeling it that day. I was going to take my one run and watch. Baumgartner ended up making a mistake in the first heat and I was able to advance. I realized this was going to be a typical Grand Prix survival race. I just was patient and made moves when I had to. Getting the National Champ title at my home resort, Canyons, in front of my parents was awesome.

Who is your biggest competition?

My own team. There are no secret lines, secret wax or anything that separates us besides talent. The men’s SBX alone has four Olympic medals (three gold.. Powers won Gold in Halfpipe), 6 X Game Gold Medals, and countless World Cup hardware. It is tough to pass someone that knows the fastest line.

What events are you looking forward to this season?

Her name is Callan Chythlook-Sifsof, but she typically signs her name as Callan C.S., because nobody can actually pronounce her name. She is a real cool girl and one of the nicest people you will ever meet; no attitude, just cool all around. I met Callan in Idaho- the day I retired after watching ladies just slay themselves on the Wu Tang at Tamarack. After too many injuries, I distinctly remember thinking in my head, “OVER IT!” I went into the tent to have some lasagna and there was Callan, just chillin with a busted up knee or shoulder – or something like that. Ever since then, despite suffering injuries that would put most athletes out for the long haul, she has been a rapidly rising star. She’s also a native Alaskan, which just makes her cooler all around. – Author: Zoë Anderson

When did you first start snowboarding?

I first got into snowboarding when I was 7. I grew up in rural Alaska, 300 miles away from any chairlift and a place only accessible by boat or plane. I started out because my brother was all about it and I had to tag along with him. Out in that part of the world there aren’t movie theaters or arcades or any of those kind of conventional things, just wilderness. So snowboarding was what we did. My brother and I would spend every day of the winter hiking and snow-machining to places we could ride.

How did you get your first sponsor? Who are your current sponsors?

My first sponsor was Volkl snowboards when I was 15. My current sponsors are Ocean Beauty Seafoods, GCI Telecommunications, The Alaska Brain Injury Network, Alyeska Resort, Oxess Snowboards (for boardercross), Jones Snowboards (for freeriding) and The North Face

What advice would you give kids looking to compete at a higher level in this sport?

The best advice I was given was from Rosey Fletcher, the 2006 Olympic Bronze medalist in Giant Slalom. Before I headed to the Vancouver Olympics she gave me a card that said “Don’t forget: Smile! Snowboarding is fun!”

I think the number one thing to success is realizing that there will most definitely be setbacks, bad seasons and hiccups and that everyone experiences those things no matter how successful. The people that continue on to the top are the people who don’t let those setbacks affect them and stop them from continuing.

What is the proudest moment in your athletic career thus far?

My proudest moment in my career was making the Olympic Team. It was after I had made the team that the breadth of the whole thing hit me and it was really the support and pride that Alaska showed me that made the whole thing so powerful. There was a send off party that my sponsors organized in Anchorage right before I left for Vancouver. I expected to just see family and friends at the event, not thinking that other people would bother to come.

There were hundreds of people who came to send me off, a big portion of them Alaskan Natives and the vibe in the room was indescribable. Up until that moment, I had been so involved in my own world with getting to the Olympics and thinking race to race, that to be in this room was overwhelming. Totally indescribable.

What is are your daily training routine like?

Every fall, the U.S. Team gets us a house in Park City, UT to train full time before the season kicks off. We’re just in the gym 5 days a week working with trainers and getting ripped. Haha.

What events are you looking forward to this season?

I’m excited for every one of them! Consistency and having a full season of riding well is what I’m looking forward to. I’m planning on doing some freeride events this year, so stoked for those!

Favorite mountain?

Alyeska Resort is still one of my favorites! Maybe it’s that you know your home mountain best and on a powder day know exactly where to go. Alyeska at Christmas time is unbeatable!

Triple8 began in 1995, growing it’s roots from the gritty skating culture of the Concrete Jungle, aka New York City. Today, Triple8 has evolved into a full-fledged protective gear company for skate, snow, and pretty much any high impact sport out there. It’s nice to know that the guys who want to protect your dome piece are used to hitting the concrete.

But, when it comes to snowboarding, they offer some of the best protection out there. Did we also mention that Triple 8 supports the sport of Snowboard Cross by sponsoring our very good friend, US Team Rider, Jonathan Cheever?

Triple8 Business Manager, Justin Rimbert tells us why you’ll choose Triple 8 over the next guy.

“We’ll never discover our full potential unless we push ourselves to find it.” Words of wisdom from the wise man himself, Travis Rice. For certain, his quote explains the level of artistry, cinematography and sheer ridiculous awesomeness of this latest and greatest Red Bull film. The Art of Flight has officially dropped & if you haven’t seen it yet, you are officially living in a hole. As the logical follow up to the 2008 Brain Farm release of “That’s it, That’s All” – an instant hit and cult classic throughout the snowboarding world – The Art of Flight had a mighty reputation to uphold. It’s not all just ski-porn either. Complete with time lapses, pond-snowboarding, slow-mo, axe throwing, random tree chopping and giant bon-fires, there’s enough fun to go around, and around, and around …

Travis Rice by Mark Gallup

Curt Morgan, President of the Boutique film studio Brain Farm, is quite possibly the world’s greatest action sports cinematographer ever (sorry, Warren). And – With the help of Red Bull and Quicksilver pouring cash money into this production, riders were able to take it to a whole new level, shredding some of the most ridiculous lines on the planet. Like, silly ridiculous. The legendary Jeremy Jones, Travis Rice, Scotty Lago and Snowboarder Magazine’s 2010 Rider of the Year John Jackson, among others, drop in and go massive in some of the most beautiful locations on the planet. Patagonia, British Columbia, Jackson Hole & Alaska were just a few stops on this magical tour of epic proportions.

Estimates for producing this film put it in the range of 2 million dollars, making it the most expensive snowboarding movie ever produced. With Producers like Circe Wallace on board, that comes as no surprise. The talent isn’t lacking either. Clearly.

“The Art of Flight is like a National Geographic snowboarding safari – nothing short of mind-blowing!” says Randy Torcom, Burton Brand Manager. This film is a must have for every snowboarder’s collection that will surely keep your winter stoke going year round! It’s touch to imagine a better snowboard movie than this. And if you haven’t seen it yet, we hope it’s because you’re just way too busy doing rad things.

As usual, Boardercross didn’t fail to disappoint, with one of the fastest and most technical courses yet. The final hit of X Games 16 Snowboardcross was around 100 feet, taking Lindsey Jacobellis out during training just a few days ago and shredding other riders equipment. This was a major upset for Jacobellis who was coming back to defend her title. So far, Lindsey had been enjoying the beginning of a great season, with her 24th career world-cup win in Veyssonaz, Switzerland. Jacobellis, who hasn’t suffered a major injury during her career as a professional snowboarder, will likely sit the rest of this season out rehabbing a torn ACL.

This year was one of the most emotional games ever, after skiing sweetheart, Sarah Burke, died on January 19th from complications due to a crash in a Park City Half-pipe earlier in January. The entire action sports community came together to honor one of the most influential and inspirational female freestyle skiers in history with many tributes to this amazing athlete throughout the weekend.

In the meantime, Nate Holland was determined to get his crown back from Nick Baumgartner who won at last year’s WX 15, ending one of the greatest winning streaks in X Games history. Holland, who has five consecutive gold medals, wasn’t going to let his winning streak go interrupted for too long, managing to push his way through the pack in what can only be described as serious racing. Said Holland before the race, “I know how to get that gold back” and he most certainly did.

Men’s Quarters

In a SUPER stacked quarterfinal field with Ross Powers, Shaun Palmer and Nate Holland (in yellow), The Palm battles for redemption but loses steam.

Men’s Semis

Baumgartner, Stian Sivertzen and Hale move on to the finals in a super close, photo finish in the battle for 3rd with Bobby Minghini getting edged out by inches!

In a battle between Holland, Schairer and Cheever following closely behind, Nate gets out front, with Vaultier following closely & Alex Deibold moving on. Cheever gets tangled up in the net after an upset takes him sideways in mid air.

Men’s Finals –

The United States dominated the podium in the men’s finals of X Games 16 with Nate Holland (8 time medalist) and Nick Baumgartner (reigning champion), battling for the lead. Holland never lets up throughout the course, taking the front after Schiavon goes down and Baumgartner nearly takes himself out. Baumgartner showed his skill and experience as a racer by managing to battle all the way to second place from the back of the pack. Rounding out third place was US athlete Jayson Hale.

Women’s Semis –

Callan Chythlook-Sifsof went out in the Ladies Semi Finals in what must have been a major upset for this phenomenal athlete from Alaska. Callan was the US lady to watch at this event after Jacobellis fell out of the competition.

Women’s Finals –

After going down during the women’s finals last year, Maltais got the hole-shot and held the lead, staying strong and smooth throughout the course. An experienced veteran and Olympic medalist, Maltais just let it rip, winning by a long shot.

Coming up next is the US Grand Prix at Canyons, Utah, (Feb. 9-12th) where Jonathan Cheever dominated the course last year.

Holland intent on reclaiming gold medal

Trevor Brown, Jr./ESPN

“I was pumped for Baumgartner. But I’ve had enough of that, and I want that gold back,” Holland says.

January 28, 2012 ◊ Aspen, CO- When Nick Baumgartner stunned the Snowboarder X field and won his first gold medal in seven tries at last year’s Winter X Games, he ended one of the greatest winning streaks in X Games history. Now, the man who owned that streak, Nate Holland, wants his gold medal back.

Holland had won five consecutive golds before settling for bronze last year, a feeling that didn’t sit well with the 33-year-old from North Lake Tahoe. He dedicated himself last summer and fall to reclaiming what he believes is his, spending a couple of months training at the U.S. team’s Center of Excellence in Utah. Then he validated that preparation with a win and runner-up finish on the World Cup circuit earlier this month. By qualifying No. 2 out of 27 riders at Buttermilk on Friday (Baumgartner was fourth; Canadian Rob Fagan won), Holland is in good position to win his sixth gold in seven years.

Holland and Baumgartner were two of four Americans to crack the top 10 in qualifying, which seeds the athletes for Saturday’s elimination heats. Despite the absence of two-time Olympic gold medalist Seth Wescott, who’s missing his first Winter X Games in 14 years because of a torn pectoral muscle, if a U.S. rider wins gold, it’ll be the seventh year in a row that has happened — no small feat when considering how popular the sport is in Europe.

“The U.S. Team is so strong,” Holland said after his qualifying run. “I think on the men’s side of the boardercross World Cup, we’ve had a guy on the podium at every event for over two years now. So it made sense to me that a U.S. rider won [at Winter X] last year, and I was pumped for Baumgartner. But I’ve had enough of that, and I want that gold back.”

The women’s qualifying runs were postponed Friday because of time constraints, but the field might never have been as wide open as it is this year. That’s because four-time defending champ Lindsey Jacobellis, whose seven gold medals make her the most successful female athlete in Winter X history, tore her ACL while training this week.

Though two-time WX gold medalist and 2010 Olympic champion Maelle Ricker is the favorite, don’t be surprised to see Callan Chythlook-Sifsof move up from silver to gold.

US Double Podium at WC Opener in Telluride

December 15th, 2012 ◊ Telluride, CO

The opener for the World Cup Season has been held at Telluride for the last three years, giving US athletes a nice home turf advantage. Athletes fly into to Telluride, a beautiful Western mountain town, from all over the world, to train on a world-class course designed by renowned course builder Jeff Ihaksi. Athletes are given star-treatment by those in Telluride who hold nothing back to show their support for the US team. “This is the best World Cup on tour. It sets the benchmark for the rest of the world who shows up. This is a top-notch course and the community is so welcoming to us. I look forward to coming back year after year.” (Cheever)

With a double podium for the US by seven-time X Games Champion and two-time Olympian Lindsey Jacobellis (Stratton, VT) taking the title for the women and Nick Baumgartner (Iron River, MI) psyched with a third place finish for the men, the US can be proud of their accomplishments this early in the season. ”This course brought so many pinch zones… the battling was unbelievable.” (Baumgartner)

The new six-man format was hugely popular amongst the athletes and likely the fans as well. Said Baumgartner about the format, “I love it. We love having people watch us and the six man format brings so much action – how could you not love it.”

The format involves two athletes who compete as a team against other teams.
The most successful sponsorships are the ones that actually make money for the sponsor, so becoming a ‘Sponsor-Focused Racer’ will not only benefit your sponsor, but you as well!
If Sponsor X invests $1,000 in you, how can they make that money BACK so that they get a positive Return on their Investment (ROI) from your riding?

It’s important for you to show an interest in your Sponsor’s business. But even if they aren’t your sponsor yet, if you come at them with these numbers, they’re a whole lot likelier to take you seriously.

Let’s say Rider X Snow Shop is your potential sponsor and you want them to invest $1,500 in you…

The Swix T73 Waxing Iron ensures you get the wax where you need it without any waste. The T73 Waxing Iron utilizes the newest technology in iron heating elements. A thick film-type heating element is actually printed onto an insulated metal base plate, a layer of protective paste is added and finally a second layer of insulated metal seals it off. This makes the iron heat up quickly and evenly, and it offers excellent corrosion resistance to ensure a long life for your iron. A dial sets accurate temperature control, and the heating plate is angled for easier application control when waxing with powders. Swix includes a waxing guide that has all the proper settings for waxing with Cera Nova waxes.
